A good way to test your balance is by standing on an unstable surface and close your eyes. Are you stable or do you find yourself wobbling or even falling off the surface of the item?
Teaching your muscles how to work together to stabalize you on a narrow base would accomplish balance. Training for balance will create muscle synergy that allows you to move better during all of your daily activities.
Start off by standing on a somewhat wobbly surface. Put a ball in your hand. Pass the ball over your head grabbing it with your other hand. Pass it back by slightly squatting and switching the ball over to the other hand at your knees. After this is easy then you can try to do it while watching the ball with your head. The next progression would be to be on a more unstable surface.
